How we handle abuse reports and legal requests

Not asking for your identity does not mean anything goes. This page sets out what is prohibited, what we do when someone reports a problem or an authority sends a request, and what we do not promise. It follows our terms of service, which are the binding text.

Prohibited

Five things you may not do with our services, in any jurisdiction

01

Malware, botnets and denial-of-service

Distributing malware, running botnets or attacking third parties.

02

Child sexual abuse material

Hosting it or facilitating the sexual exploitation of minors in any form.

03

Spam

Sending unsolicited bulk email or operating spam infrastructure.

04

Terrorism and human trafficking

Knowingly hosting content that funds or directly facilitates either.

05

Unauthorised access

Attempting to breach, scan or gain unauthorised access to systems you do not own or have permission to test.

What happens

What we do when we receive a report or a request

We receive it

Abuse reports and legal requests reach us through the contact page.

We assess it

We look at whether it describes a clear violation of our terms or a valid legal process in the relevant jurisdiction.

We act where it is clear or required

We may suspend or terminate a service without prior notice for a clear violation, for payment fraud, or where the law applicable to that location requires it.

We give you a chance where we safely can

Where it is practical and safe, we try to notify you and let you retrieve your data first.

Copyright and location

Takedowns depend on where the server is

We do not proactively monitor customer content beyond the prohibited list. Different countries enforce different content and copyright law, and a request about a server is handled under the rules of the country it sits in. Each location page explains that country’s approach to copyright and takedowns. See DMCA-ignored hosting for what that does and does not mean, and offshore hosting for the ten countries.

What we do not promise

  • We do not promise to ignore complaints. A “we ignore everything” policy is a marketing line, not a legal position.
  • We do not promise a response time. We have no formal SLA.
  • We do not promise that a server will never be suspended. Clear violations and valid legal process are handled under our terms.
Who it affects

For customers and for people reporting a problem

If you rent a server

  • Read the acceptable-use section of the terms
  • Keep your own backups: a suspended service may not be recoverable
  • Respond to support tickets about reports promptly
  • Remember you are responsible for what you run

If you are reporting a problem

  • Use the contact page
  • Give the IP address or domain and what you saw
  • Say which law or term you think is broken
  • Send valid legal process through the same route
FAQ

Abuse and legal request questions

01What is not allowed on your servers?

Malware and botnets, denial-of-service attacks, child sexual abuse material, spam, content that funds or directly facilitates terrorism or human trafficking, and unauthorised scanning or access to other people's systems. This applies in every jurisdiction.

02Do you monitor my content?

We do not proactively monitor customer content beyond the prohibited list, and we do not monitor or log what happens inside your servers.

03What happens when you get an abuse report?

We assess whether it describes a clear violation of our terms or a valid legal process. We may suspend a service for a clear violation, and where practical we try to notify you and let you retrieve your data first.

04Do you respond to DMCA notices?

Copyright handling depends on the country the server is in. See DMCA-ignored hosting and each country's page for specifics.

05Will you ignore complaints?

No. We act on clear violations and valid legal process. Anyone who promises to ignore all complaints is selling a slogan.

06How do I report abuse?

Use the contact page.
