We've got a new update. We now offer our own Web Console. Open the console and type ssh root@your-server-ip to reach any server you own, right from your browser. No SSH app needed.
Matrix is an open chat protocol. Run your own server and your rooms, accounts and history live where you decide. The official Synapse server is happy on a small VPS. Here is the size to start with, the settings that matter, and what self-hosting does not fix. Servers from $8.50 a month.
The sizes are our suggestion: the Synapse documentation gives only the 1 GB RAM figure for large public rooms. Prices are one-month prices; a 12-month term takes 50% off.
or $4.25/mo on a 12-month term (−50%)
Synapse, PostgreSQL and a reverse proxy with room to spare. Good while you stay in a few private rooms.
Configure and orderor $7.13/mo on a 12-month term (−50%)
For joining large public rooms and storing a lot of uploaded media. Media is what fills the disk first.
Configure and orderThe Synapse documentation recommends PostgreSQL for almost all installations and says SQLite should not be used in a production server. Starting on SQLite means migrating later.
Federation lets your users talk to people on other Matrix servers. It needs your server reachable over HTTPS, and the documentation suggests a reverse proxy on port 8448. A private server for a team can skip it. A federated one joins the wider network, and joining big public rooms is what uses real memory.
An open sign-up page on a public server will be found by spammers. Create accounts yourself or use invite tokens.
User IDs look like @name:yourdomain.com. Pick the domain you will keep, because it is hard to change later. See buy domain names.
Synapse publishes Docker images and Debian and Ubuntu packages, and can be installed from PyPI. Use one of the documented routes and follow the current guide for your version.
These are the ideas, not a full guide. Follow the official installation page for the current steps.

# database: use PostgreSQL (name: psycopg2), not SQLite
# put Synapse behind a reverse proxy that terminates TLSSynapse is the reference homeserver for the Matrix chat protocol, written in Python. Running your own lets you host accounts and rooms and, if you choose, federate with other Matrix servers.
The official documentation gives one figure: at least 1 GB of free RAM if you want to join large public rooms. We suggest 4 GB for a small server with PostgreSQL and a reverse proxy, so there is headroom. The 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 60 GB size is $8.50 a month in Romania.
Yes for a real server. The documentation recommends PostgreSQL for almost all installations and says SQLite should not be used in production.
Clients use HTTPS on 443 behind your reverse proxy. For federation the documentation recommends a reverse proxy on port 8448.
It gives you control of the data, but not invisibility. The server sees metadata, and rooms that federate are copied to other servers. Use end-to-end encrypted rooms for message content.
Yes. Generate a login and pay with Monero, Bitcoin, USDT or another supported coin, with no name, ID or phone. See no-KYC VPS hosting.
Media uploads grow fastest. The $14.25 size (4 vCPU, 8 GB, 200 GB NVMe in Romania) suits a federated server with many uploads. You can also order a larger disk when you build a custom server.
Checked 19 October 2026. Chain sizes and software requirements change, so confirm against the source before you order.
