Discord bot hosting on a VPS, from $5.76 a month

A Discord bot holds one connection to Discord open all day. A laptop closes, a free tier sleeps, a VPS just keeps running. Here is what size you need, how to keep the bot alive after a crash, and the limits Discord sets as you grow.

How it works

Why a bot wants a VPS and not a free tier

A Discord bot connects to the Gateway, which the documentation describes as persistent WebSockets. If your process stops, the bot goes offline. Free hosting often sleeps idle apps, restarts them at random or caps memory, which shows up as a bot that goes offline for no reason.

You do not need to open any ports

A normal bot only makes outbound connections to Discord. The firewall can block everything inbound except SSH. If you add a web dashboard later, open only the port you need.

Limits Discord sets as you grow

  • Sharding: apps in 2,500 or more guilds must enable sharding, and each shard supports a maximum of 2,500 guilds.
  • Verification: verification is required for apps in 100 or more guilds.
  • Privileged intents: Guild Presences, Guild Members and Message Content are privileged. Small apps can switch them on in the Developer Portal; apps seen by more than 10,000 unique users go through an access review.

None of these depend on your server. They depend on your bot’s reach, so plan for them before you hit them.

Setup

Keep your bot alive with systemd

Create a normal user, put the bot in its home folder and let systemd restart it. This works for any language.

Create a user and install your runtime
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos '' bot
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y nodejs npm # or python3-venv for Python
# copy your bot to /home/bot/app, then install its dependencies as the bot user
/etc/systemd/system/discord-bot.service

[Install]

Start it and read the logs
chmod 600 /home/bot/app/.env
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now discord-bot
journalctl -u discord-bot -f
Good to know

Keep the bot safe

Do

  • Keep the bot token in an environment file, never in the code or a public repository
  • Reset the token in the Developer Portal if it ever leaks
  • Use SSH keys and keep the server patched
  • Take a backup of your database; see how to back up a VPS

Avoid

  • Running the bot as root
  • Asking for privileged intents you do not use
  • Leaving the file with the token readable by every user
  • Storing the database only on the server with no copy
FAQ

Discord bot hosting questions

01How do I host a Discord bot 24/7?

Run it on a VPS as a systemd service with Restart=always. It starts at boot, restarts after a crash and keeps running when you log out. The setup above shows the unit file.

02How much RAM does a Discord bot need?

Most bots run well in 1 to 2 GB. Our cheapest VPS has 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU and 40 GB NVMe for $5.76 a month. Bots in many guilds with caching need more, and Discord requires sharding from 2,500 guilds.

03Do I need to open ports for a Discord bot?

No. A gateway bot only makes outbound connections. Open a port only if you run a web dashboard or an interactions endpoint.

04Is a VPS better than free bot hosting?

For a bot you want online all the time, yes. Free tiers often sleep, restart or limit memory. A VPS costs from $5.76 a month and gives you full root.

05Can I run several bots on one server?

Yes. Give each bot its own user and its own systemd service. The 2 vCPU, 4 GB size ($8.50 in Romania) fits several small bots with a database.

06Can I pay without a card?

Yes. Generate a login and pay in Bitcoin, Monero, USDT or another supported coin, with no name, ID or phone. See buy a VPS without a credit card.
