Best VPS Setup for Trading Bots: Latency, Uptime and Safety

Choose a VPS location by measured latency to the exchange, keep a bot running with systemd and lock down API keys. Not financial advice.

Trading bots, arbitrage scripts and market-data collectors run all day and care about two things: staying up, and being close to the exchange. A VPS handles both better than a home computer.

Terminal window on a VPS showing the commands used for a VPS for trading bots and low latency, starting with “ping -c 20 api.example-exchange.com”
The kind of commands you will run on your server in this guide.

Why not run it at home?

  • Power cuts and router reboots stop your bot at the worst moment.
  • Home connections add jitter and are rarely close to an exchange.
  • Leaving a computer on around the clock costs more than a small VPS.

What matters in a VPS for bots

  • Network latency to the exchange. Most major crypto exchanges run their matching engines in a few regions. Pick the location with the lowest round trip to the API you use.
  • Consistent CPU. Dedicated-CPU plans give steadier timing than shared ones.
  • Stable uptime. Choose a provider with a status page and NVMe storage for fast logs and databases.
  • Modest resources. Many bots need only 1 to 2 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM.
The steps of this guide in order: 1. Why not run it at home?; 2. What matters in a VPS for bots; 3. Measure, do not guess; 4. Keep the bot running; 5. Safety checklist
The steps in this guide, in order.

Measure, do not guess

Order a small plan in two or three candidate locations, then test the real latency to your exchange's API:

ping -c 20 api.example-exchange.com
curl -o /dev/null -s -w "connect: %{time_connect}s  total: %{time_total}s\n" https://api.example-exchange.com/ping
mtr -rwc 50 api.example-exchange.com

Choose by the median and the worst case, not the best single result. Spikes hurt more than a slightly higher average.

Keep the bot running

[Unit]
Description=Trading bot
After=network-online.target

[Service]
User=bot
WorkingDirectory=/opt/bot
ExecStart=/usr/bin/python3 bot.py
Restart=always
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Save it as /etc/systemd/system/bot.service and enable it with systemctl enable --now bot. Systemd restarts it after a crash and starts it on boot.

Safety checklist

  • Use API keys with trade-only permissions and withdrawals disabled.
  • Restrict each key to your server's IP address in the exchange settings.
  • Store keys in environment variables or a secrets file with restricted permissions, never in a public repository.
  • Log every order, and set alerts for errors and unusual balances.
  • Test with small amounts first. Automated trading can lose money quickly.

Nothing here is financial advice. A fast server does not make a strategy profitable.
