Compare Switzerland, the Netherlands, Germany, Romania, Moldova, Finland, the US, Panama, Singapore and Seychelles for law, latency and use case.

This guide compares the ten locations we offer on the points that usually decide the choice. It is general information, not legal advice.

What "jurisdiction" really means for a server

The country where a server sits decides which laws apply to the hardware and the data on it: how a court order reaches the host, what the data-protection rules say and how long records must be kept. Your own country's law still applies to you wherever the server is. Read is offshore hosting legal for the basics.

The steps in this guide, in order.

The questions that matter most

  1. Where are your users? Latency beats everything else for interactive apps. A server near your audience is simply faster.
  2. What rules does your content face? Inside the EU, GDPR applies to personal data of EU residents wherever you host. Outside it, local data law applies instead.
  3. How does a takedown notice reach you? Some countries have formal notice processes (the US has DMCA). Others process complaints through court orders or local law. Read what DMCA-ignored means.
  4. What does it cost? Prices vary by location. See the locations page for current figures.

Common picks

  • Privacy-focused project for European users: Switzerland or the Netherlands.
  • Budget site with Eastern European traffic: Moldova or Romania.
  • US customers and payment flows: United States.
  • Trading or latency-sensitive bots: the location nearest the exchange, see VPS for trading bots.
  • Distance from claims in your home country: a location with no treaty link to it, though no location is absolute.

Check before you commit
