About this tool

## Reliable, current answers

Every lookup goes to the source, and we show what came back.

### From the registry

Domains are looked up with RDAP, the modern replacement for WHOIS, run by the registries themselves. Extensions without RDAP fall back to classic WHOIS.

### Privacy is respected

Since GDPR, most registries hide personal contact details. We show what is public and tell you when details are redacted.

### Domains and IP addresses

Look up a domain for its registration and DNS, or an IPv4 or IPv6 address for the network, organisation and abuse contact that own it.

FAQ

## Common questions

**What is WHOIS, and what is RDAP?**

WHOIS is the long-running way to look up who registered a domain. RDAP is its modern, structured replacement, which registries now provide. We use RDAP wherever it exists and classic WHOIS where it doesn't.

**Why are the owner's details hidden?**

Since privacy laws such as GDPR, most registries and registrars redact the registrant's name, email and phone. Some domains also use a privacy service. That's normal, and it isn't a sign anything is wrong.

**What do the status flags mean?**

They are standard EPP status codes. For example "client transfer prohibited" means the registrar has locked the domain against transfers, which is common and healthy. We explain each flag under the result.

**Can I look up a subdomain?**

Registration records exist only for the main domain, so a name like blog.example.com is looked up as example.com. We tell you when we do that.

**The domain isn't registered. Can I get it?**

If the registry has no record, it's available. We link you to our [domain search](https://offshorevpshosting.com/buy-domain-names) to check the price.
